Gareth Batty and Zander de Bruyn hit half-centuries as Surrey eased past their follow-on target on day three at Whitgift School.
After the early loss of Rory Hamilton-Brown (159), De Bruyn (61) and Batty (79) put on 106 for the seventh wicket to ensure Essex would bat again.
Yasir Arafat also weighed in with 44 not out as Surrey, 277-4 overnight, were dismissed for 506.
Alastair Cook then hit 62 not out as Essex closed on 112-2, to lead by 154.
But, with only one day to play, and with both sides having batted comfortably, a draw appears the most likely result.
