Durham's Will Smith has Warwickshire on back foot
LV County Championship Division One, Edgbaston
Close of play, day one: Durham 348-3 v Warwickshire
Durham 3pts, Warwicks 1pt
Will Smith hit his first first-class century since 2009 to give Durham the upper hand on Warwickshire on day one at Edgbaston.
Opener Smith batted through the day for his unbeaten 153 to take the visitors to 348-3.
He shared an unbroken stand of 221 with Dale Benkenstein (90 not out) and added 59 with Ben Stokes (33).
Naqaash Tahir, Boyd Rankin and Rikki Clarke took a wicket each on a long day for the Warwickshire bowlers.
Former captain Smith, who led Durham to the County Championship title in 2009, lost his place in the side last season and had to wait 11 months for another chance in the first team.
Following half-centuries in the defeat by Sussex and the home win against Warwickshire, he never missed an opportunity to score off the back foot on an Edgbaston pitch that is an improvement on the track that cost the Bears eight points in the win over Worcestershire.
After Michael di Venuto was caught behind attempting to leave Tahir and Gordon Muchall presented a routine slip catch off Clarke, Stokes played some eye-catching strokes in his 54-ball stay.
The New Zealand-born all-rounder clipped Rankin to mid-wicket, after which Smith and Benkenstein took complete control.
