Wayne Madsen and Usman Khawaja both hit centuries as Derbyshire racked up 370-3 on the opening day of their clash with Kent at Canterbury.

Madsen (140) put on 96 for the first wicket with Chesney Hughes (57) as the visitors dominated the opening session.

He and Khawaja, playing his last game for the county before teaming up with Australia A, then shared 231 for the second wicket as Kent toiled.

Khawaja fell for 135 in the final over, while Dan Redfern finished 18 not out.

The partnership between Madsen and Khawaja was a Derbyshire record for the second wicket against Kent, beating the stand of 146 between Ian Hall and Mike Page at Folkestone in 1965.

CLOSE OF PLAY SUMMARIES

BBC Radio Kent's Matt Cole:

"This looks like a very good toss for Derbyshire to win, it was obvious from the first few overs that it's batting paradise in the middle at the St Lawrence Ground.

"Not the sort of pitch you'd want to make your Championship debut on as a bowler, but left-armer Ashley Shaw will have learned plenty about keeping line and length on unfriendly strips in just this one day, and got his reward with a late wicket.

"He and the rest of the Kent attack stuck to their task, but they found Derbyshire's top three ready and able to punish any bad ball.

"How Kent must be wishing Usman Khawaja had decided to leave for his international stint with Australia A a week early - and perhaps taken Wayne Madsen with him for company."
