Nottinghamshire are giving a trial to former Hampshire batsman Chris Benham.

Benham, 28, was released at the end of last season and director of cricket Mick Newell is eager to bring in new faces to his depleted squad.

Alex Hales and Neil Edwards are both out injured and Samit Patel has been away with the England Lions.

Benham has been playing for Unicorns and Newell told BBC Radio Nottingham: "We have him playing in the second team and will have a look at him."

Newell added: "We know we are short of players at the moment and we are asking players to bat out of position.

"Hopefully by the time we go to Worcester [County Championship game on Sunday, 29 May] we'll have a few more players available."
