Chesney Hughes hit his third first-class century as Derbyshire had the better of day one against Surrey.
West Indian batsman Hughes (124) put on 144 with Dan Redfern (55) after Tim Linley (4-71) had initially reduced the hosts to 16-2.
Wes Durston (47), Greg Smith (34) and Luke Sutton (39 not out) also contributed for Derbyshire.
Surrey's bowlers had the better of the final session as the home side, who were 237-3 at tea, closed on 375-7.
Jade Dernbach, Tom Jewell and Gareth Batty ended the day with one wicket each.
