Captain Marcus Trescothick hit 189 to help Somerset build a first-innings lead on the second day of their clash with Yorkshire at Taunton.

He hit four sixes and 17 fours, sharing 257 for the first wicket with Arul Suppiah (95) as Somerset dominated the first two sessions.

But Yorkshire hit back after tea, when Ryan Sidebottom struck twice.

Somerset reached the close on 389-6, a lead of 31, with England Lions batsman James Hildreth still there on 49.

The home side had resumed on 7-0 and had an early let off when Suppiah was dropped at slip on nine by Adil Rashid off Ajmal Shahzad and again on 68 when Adam Lyth spurned another slip chance off Oliver Hannon-Dalby.

Trescothick also survived a sharp caught and bowled chance off Hannon-Dalby on 98, and nudged the next ball through mid-wicket for two to bring up his third Championship century of the summer off 146 balls.

Suppiah kept him good company, making his best score of the season, but missed out on going to three figures when he pulled a short ball from Rashid straight to mid-wicket.

Nick Compton was quickly caught behind and Alex Barrow followed as Yorkshire reduced Somerset 325-3 by the time the new ball was available.

Sidebottom made good use of it, enticing Trescothick to edge to slip for his 500th first-class wicket, before pinning Peter Trego lbw for a duck four balls later.

Jos Buttler also fell before the close, but Hildreth played fluently to reach close one shy of a half-century.
