Northants head coach David Capel says South Africa Twenty20 captain Johan Botha is a "world class" signing.
The 29-year-old off-spinner has joined Northants for their FP t20 campaign, which begins on Friday against Leicestershire at Wantage Road.
"To bowl the way he does, he's been world class in the IPL and World Cup competition," Capel told BBC Look East.
"He's a very good fielder and his batting has really developed over the last two or three years."
Capel added: I think Andrew [Hall, captain] and the rest of the team will find him good on the field as well with his experience, he's a very good man in cricket and a good man to have with us."
Botha joins a Northants team that are undefeated in their seven County Championship Division Two outings and that have won all five of their opening Clydesdale Bank 40 fixtures.
"I think your attitude is something you can always bring, if you're positive around the guys you can pass on your experiences," he said.
"If I can take the team across the line a few times that would be great."
