Half centuries from Craig Kieswetter and Roelof van der Merwe helped Somerset secure a comfortable 40-run victory over Middlesex at Taunton.

The hosts reached an impressive 235-5 with Kieswetter hitting 59 off just 22 balls while van der Merwe hit five sixes on his way to reaching 51.

John Simpson's 60 off 27 balls proved to be in vain as the visitors could only reach 195-9 in reply.

Gemaal Hussain and Lewis Gregory took three wickets apiece for Somerset.

Having missed their opening two matches of the campaign, Kieswetter hit three fours and a six in the third over to give the hosts a quickfire 50.

After the heroics of the England international and South African van der Merwe, an unbroken sixth-wicket stand of 54 by James Hildreth (35 not out) and Arul Suppiah gave Somerset what proved to be an unbeatable total.
