Hampshire academy director Tony Middleton says the county are relishing the prospect of hosting their first ever Test match on Thursday.

England face Sri Lanka in the third Test of the series at The Rose Bowl.

"It's exciting for us, it's been a long time preparing for this but this was the plan when we moved from the County Ground," he told BBC Radio Solent.

"We wanted to get big cricket here and we're now well on the way for that, these are exiting times for us."

Hampshire moved to the Rose Bowl stadium in 2001 and five years later it was awarded provisional Test match status by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).

"There will be people coming from a wide area to watch this test match and if it goes well we hope they'll be many more for the future," added Middleton.

"There is still a lot on it with England one up in the series, so there's everything to look forward to."
