|Close of play, day one: Essex 183, Northants 79-7|
Chaminda Vaas and David Masters shared the bowling honours as 17 wickets fell on day one of Essex's clash with Northants at Chelmsford.
Vaas took 6-46 as Essex were bowled out for 183, opener Tom Westley (61) making a third of the hosts' runs.
Northants then limped to 79-7 at the close, Masters ending the day with figures of 4-23.
Swing, helped by a combination of poor strokes and bad judgement, was the main cause of the glut of wickets.
But the fact that over 15 fell in the day ensures an automatic consultation between Lord's and the match umpires Peter Hartley and Ismail Dawood.
Northants will begin day two 104 runs behind the hosts, hoping that 37-year-old all-rounder Vaas (12no) can build on a valuable 19-run partnership with David Lucas.
