Somerset secured a place in the last eight of the FL t20 despite being held to a sensational tie by South Group bottom side Middlesex.

Last year's runners-up were limited to 143-6, Peter Trego top-scoring with 36, backed up by Kieron Pollard (33) and Jimmy Hildreth (31).

Scott Newman and Neil Dexter then both made 33 in Middlesex's reply.

Needing 18 off the last over, despite Ryan McLaren's two sixes, the home side valiantly fell just short on 143-6.

It was the second tie in this season's competition, following Lancashire's against Derbyshire.

The point moves Somerset up into second, ahead of Sussex, who were hammered by group leaders Hampshire, but they have now finished all their group matches. And they will have to wait on this week's remaining matches involving Kent and Surrey to see if they have secured a place in the last eight.

Middlesex appeared to be heading for their 12th defeat in 14 games when they began the final over needing 18 off the bowling of Pollard.

McLaren, who had earlier taken 3-37, then struck sixes off successive balls to take them within four of victory. But he holed out on the midwicket boundary next ball looking for another one. And that left Tom Smith to scramble a two and a single off the last two deliveries to bring the scores level.

Somerset had Craig Kieswetter back from international duty to open the batting alongside Marcus Trescothick, but neither of them got very far on a sluggish pitch.
