A first five-wicket haul of Mark Turner's career helped Derbyshire into a commanding position over Northants.
Turner finished with 5-32 as the home side, who resumed day two on 220-6, were dismissed for 275.
Derbyshire then increased their 89-run first-innings lead to 260, closing on 171-4 at Wantage Road.
Opener Wayne Madsen set the platform with 48, while Wes Durston hit two sixes in a rapid 62, before rain forced an early finish.
