Tom Maynard scored a rapid century for Surrey to set up a thrilling final day against Middlesex at Guildford.
The hosts had crumbled to 117 all out in their first inings in reply to the visitors' 308, Tim Murtagh taking 5-30 and Corey Collymore 4-28.
Following on, Surrey were in trouble on 114-4 but Maynard smashed an unbeaten 105 in 76 balls, including two sixes.
Zander de Bruyn made 82 as Surrey closed on 306-6 with a lead of 115, Murtagh taking 2-56.
