Leicestershire coach Phil Whitticase is hoping the fact James Taylor has received England recognition could help keep the batsman at Grace Road.

Taylor, who has been named Lions skipper for the games against Sri Lanka A, has a year left on his contract.

But Leicestershire are eager to tie the 21-year-old to a longer deal amid interest from Warwickshire.

"He is happy. The fact he's been picked to captain the Lions is fantastic," Whitticase told BBC Radio Leicester.

"It's fantastic for him and is also a massive boost for the club. Ultimately he wants to play for England and quite rightly so.

"Everyone is aware what happened with Warwickshire's approach. We stood firm on that and we will look to try to get him on a lengthy contract. It has always been our aim to keep our best players.

"I am always optimistic. He has spoken to me personally and said he is happy at the club and loves what we are doing."
