Jos Buttler hit a superb 109-ball century as Somerset took charge on day two of their Division One match with Sussex at Taunton.
Resuming on 36-1, Somerset slumped to 93-7 before Buttler (100) and Alfonso Thomas (42) shared an eighth-wicket stand of 142.
The hosts were eventually bowled out for 286 after Murali Kartik, batting at number 10, added 34.
Sussex ended the day on 94-4 to give them a second innings lead of 53.
