Gloucestershire ended day two of their clash with Derbyshire 186 runs behind with nine second innings wickets left after being made to follow on.
Will Gidman finished with a career-best 6-92 as Derbyshire, 329-4 overnight at Derby, were dismissed for 413.
The home attack then shared the wickets around as Gloucestershire were bowled out for 220, Richard Coughtrie top scoring with a career-best 54 not out.
Jonathan Clare then removed Hamish Marshall as the visitors closed on 7-1.
It could have been worse for Gloucestershire had it not been for a last wicket stand of 68 between Coughtrie and David Payne which took them past 200.
