County Championship leaders Durham picked up a second bowling bonus point but were again frustrated by the weather at Chester-le-Street.
Further rain and bad light meant only 53 overs were possible on the third day, with bottom-of-the-table Hampshire moving from 77-3 to 230-6.
Neil McKenzie, who scored 237 against Yorkshire last week, was out for 90, while Dimitri Mascarenhas made 50.
A draw now appears inevitable unless the captains contrive a result.
That may yet prove the case as Durham captain Phil Mustard said: "I think they are quite keen to do something.
"We were tempted to try for full bonus points, which would have put us 17 points clear at the top.
"But we don't have time to get them and our rivals have games in hand, so we would like to go for a win if possible.
"It's in our favour that we are batting last and we would try to knock off a target."
