Derbyshire fast bowler Mike Footitt claimed his first five-wicket haul to help bowl out Northants for 267 on the first day at Chesterfield.
On his first County Championship start of 2011, Footitt (5-58) removed four of Northants' top six as the visitors slumped to 85-5.
Alex Wakely (88) then helped to rescue his side in a crucial 116-run sixth-wicket stand with Andrew Hall (45).
Martin Guptill hit 55 as the home side struggled to 116-4 at the close.
Footitt was only drafted in as a replacement for Mark Turner who was out with a hip injury.
But he grabbed his chance on a well-grassed pitch after Luke Sutton had put the Division Two leaders in, at one point taking four for eight in 25 balls.
