Sam Robson hit 95 as Division Two promotion chasers Middlesex edged into the lead on a rain-shortened second day against Kent at Canterbury.
Resuming on 55-0, Middlesex lost a third of the day's over allocation in reaching 258-7 - a lead of just 16.
Dawid Malan was still there at the close on 55, while Scott Newman (34) earlier shared an opening stand of 99 with Robson.
Matt Coles starred for Kent before the early finish, taking 3-43.

"A strong recovery from Kent in the afternoon session, lad by a fired-up Matt Coles, who bowled with energy and aggression, his three wickets being the least he deserved.
"Sam Robson deserved a century, batting observantly and showing a real maturity in picking the balls to hit, but Middlesex's second collapse in three days has left genuine question mark over their middle order.
"Kent will look for the new ball to do the damage in the morning. Tim Murtagh looked particularly troubled by the shorter stuff."

"Middlesex threw away a strong position after lunch, having appeared on the verge of a big first innings total, similar to the collapse that destroyed Kent's first innings.
"But Sam Robson continued his fine form with the bat and Dawid Malan had to see off some tricky spells as the ball nipped around.
"Matt Coles had to wait until the 43rd over for a bowl but made a big impact, more so when he was switched to the Nackington Road end for his second spell, while Azhar Mahmood and Adam Ball were unlucky not to get in amongst the wickets."
