Alex Hales hit a century for Nottinghamshire on a difficult day for batsmen at Trent Bridge.
Hales' 115 kept the scoreboard ticking over for the home team as wickets fell all too regularly at the other end.
Paul Franks (34) was the only other Notts batsman to make it out of the 20s as they were all out for 270, with Mitchell Claydon taking 3-84.
In reply Durham found the going equally tough as they lost three early wickets before closing on 44-3.
Nottinghamshire's innings received a much-needed boost from their number 10, Darren Pattinson, who smashed a quickfire 28 - including three sixes - to help them past 250.
Pattinson's contribution continued with the ball as he claimed the wickets of Will Smith and Mark Stoneman.
