Essex suffered a complete wash-out of the first day of their County Championship game against Derbyshire at Chelmsford.
After prolonged rain, play was finally called off for the day at tea.
Early morning rain was still falling at the scheduled start time (1100:BST) before it relented a little to raise hopes of a delayed start.
The toss was set back but the light deteriorated and, shortly afterwards, light rain started to fall once more.
With no improvement in conditions during the afternoon, umpires Nigel Cowley and George Sharp had little option but to abandon play for the day.
Derbyshire started the day fourth in Division Two, a place ahead of fellow promotion outsiders Essex - and 24 points adrift of second-placed Middlesex.
