Title hopefuls Durham go into day three against champions Nottinghamshire still needing another 301 to win after a day when 18 wickets fell at Trent Bridge.
Resuming on 44-3, Durham were shot out for 195, 75 in arrears, Andre Adams and Graeme White each taking three wickets.
Mitch Claydon then took 5-54 as Notts were bowled out for 245 second time around, Riki Wessels hitting 84, supported by Adams (52 not out).
But Durham then lost opener Will Smith fifth ball, to finish on 20-1.
Durham, who missed out on any batting bonus points, will now have to hit the highest score of the match to win on a pitch offering plenty of assistance for seamers, with occasional uneven bounce.
Ian Blackwell top scored for Durham in their first innings with 52 from 54 balls before being caught and bowled by left-arm spinner White, who finished with a career-best 3-17.
