Ryan ten Doeschate hit an unbeaten half-century as Essex gained the upper hand on Derbyshire at Chelmsford.
The visitors were bowled out for just 132 as David Masters and Maurice Chambers claimed three wickets apiece.
Essex made a disastrous start, quickly sluping to 1-2 before Jaik Mickleburgh (34) and Adam Wheater (31) put on a partnership of 49.
Ten Doeschate ended on 54 not out as the hosts closed 41 runs ahead with three wickets left.
