Essex and Derbyshire were forced to settle for a draw as the final day was washed out at Chelmsford.
The visitors were due to resume their second innings on 187-4 but, in a repeat of the first day, rain prevented any play.
The covers were removed twice during a lull in the bad weather but the game was finally called off at 13:50 BST.
The result effectively ends both sides' hopes of promotion as only victory for either would have kept them alive.
