Rain frustrated Yorkshire and Somerset as only 41 overs were possible on the opening day of their vital Division One clash at Headingley.

No play was possible before lunch, with Somerset then battling to 140-3 before rain forced an early close.

Opener Alex Barrow ended the day 55 not out, with Jos Buttler unbeaten on 43.

Yorkshire must win to stand a chance of avoiding relegation, while Somerset need victory in both their remaining matches to keep their title hopes alive.

Play did not begin until 1415 BST but once it did the hosts certainly enjoyed some encouragement as Moin Ashraf took two wickets in two balls - one at the end of an over and the other at the start of his next - to leave Somerset 88-3.

Ashraf ended a second-wicket stand of 76 between Barrow and Chris Jones (31) by bowling Jones with one that pitched on middle and hit off stump, before also bowling James Hildreth.

But after 19-year-old Barrow moved to his maiden first-class half-century from 109 balls, Buttler launched a brutal counter attack which brought him nine boundaries and 43 out of an unbroken stand of 52 in 47 deliveries.
