Captain Andrew Hall led from the front as Northants fought back on the opening day of their crucial promotion clash against Gloucestershire at Northampton.
With both sides still in the shake-up, Will Gidman (5-60) gave outsiders Gloucestershire an early boost by reducing Northants to 50-4.
Kyle Coetzer (84) steadied the innings, before Hall (86) and David Willey helped the hosts close on 316-9.
James Middlebrook (28no) will be key to their hopes of more batting points.
Northants came into this match one point ahead of third-placed Surrey while Gloucestershire, who are fourth, were nine points behind their opponents in the table.
Hall won the toss and chose to bat in very windy conditions but the start was delayed for 25 minutes because of a wet outfield.
