|Surrey 22pts, Essex 5pts|
Surrey moved into serious promotion contention as fast bowler Chris Jordan took four wickets to bowl his side to a vital 109-run victory over Essex.
Resuming on 142-5, still needing 207 for victory, Essex were bowled out for 239 in little more than an hour.
Jordan took all but one of the five wickets to fall, to finish with 4-57.
Graham Napier led the Essex resistance, but Jordan had him caught in the slips for 80, one of three victims for England old boy Mark Ramprakash.
Surrey now have 203 points, just one behind second-placed Northants, going onto the final round of matches.
Surrey's final game is at home to Derbyshire, starting on Monday (12 September, 1030 BST), while Northants host Gloucestershire and Division Two Leaders Middlesex will be at Leicester.
