Northants' hopes of promotion to Division One seem to be fading despite the hosts dominating their clash with Gloucestershire.
The home side, resuming on 316-9, made 343 in their first innings, with Will Gidman taking 5-74.
David Willey (5-29) helped dismiss Gloucestershire for 183, before taking 3-15 as the visitors closed on 84-5 following on, still 76 behind.
But his work could prove in vain with Surrey looking set to beat Derbyshire.
