Ireland secure Intercontinental Cup win over Canada

Paul Stirling hit 19 fours and two sixes in his innings of 107 at Rathmines

Ireland cruised to an inninings and 11 runs victory over Canada within two days in the Intercontinental Cup game at Rathmines.

After taking their overnight score of 435-7 on to 462 all out, the Irish sent Canadian wickets tumbling.

YMCA spinner Albert van der Merwe picked up five wickets as the visitors were dismissed for 194 on Wednesday.

Canada followed on and they made 257 with van der Merwe and George Dockrell each taking three wickets.

Rizwan Cheema smashed a quickfire 97 off 45 balls for the Canadians, hitting 10 sixes and six fours.

During Tuesday's play, Middlesex batsman Paul Stirling top-scored for Ireland with 107, Alex Cusack scored 81 and Kevin O'Brien hit a typically aggressive 79.

Stirling and Gary Wilson put on 155 for the opening wicket before the Surrey wicketkeeper departed for 61.

The Irish clinched a five-wicket win over Namibia in their opening Intercontinental Cup fixture last week.
