Nottinghamshire closed day three 74 runs behind with six second innings wickets remaining after being made to follow on by Sussex at Trent Bridge.
The hosts, 132-1 overnight, soon lost Karl Turner (63), but then only saw Darren Bravo (53) and Chris Read (55) resist as they were bowled out for 311.
Monty Panesar then struck twice in three balls as Notts slumped from 75-1 to 77-4 second time around.
They were 103-4 at the close, with much to do on the final day to avoid defeat.
