Leicestershire have cancelled wicketkeeper Tom New's contract.
The 26-year-old had a year to run on his deal but had a difficult time with the bat last season, scoring 261 runs in the Championship at just 17.40.
And although Paul Nixon has retired, New was likely to be behind both Ned Eckersley and Paul Dixey in the pecking order in 2012.
A statement said: "The club thanks Tom for his services over the past eight years and wishes him well."
Leicestershire finished bottom of Division Two in the County Championship last season, winning just one game.
New struggled to make an impact in the four-day game and was not part of the team that won the FL t20 title.
Eckersley is the favourite to take over as wicketkeeper in the longest form of the game.
He impressed during four Championship appearances at the end of the season, amassing 321 runs in eight innings - including a century against Middlesex - and averaging 40.21.
