Hampshire will have to perform well on the final day at the Rose Bowl to avoid a defeat against Gloucestershire.
The visitors are in charge as they lead by 244 runs with five wickets remaining after enjoying the better of day three.
Hampshire started the day on 182-7 but could only add another 17 as they were all out for 199 with Will Gidman (5-48) taking two of the last three wickets.
Gloucestershire were on 71-5 but a partnership of 58 between Ian Cockbain and Will Gidman left them on 129-5.
