England captain Andrew Strauss was dismissed for a second-ball duck on the second day of Middlesex's County Championship match against Durham.

Strauss, looking for some form ahead of the first Test against West Indies in May, was bowled by Graham Onions.

Onions, looking to nudge the England selectors, helped reduce the hosts to 28-4 on the way to figures of 3-24.

But, with Neil Dexter ending unbeaten on 65, Middlesex recovered to 132-5 before rain forced an early close.

Dexter, who has temporarily relinquished the captaincy in order to concentrate on his form, was dropped on four at gully by Ben Stokes, but went on to share stands of 55 with Dawid Malan (35) and 49 with John Simpson.

Earlier, as the match begun after the entire first day at Lord's had been lost to rain, Strauss was bowled through the gate by Onions from the second ball of the morning.

The left-hander, who has been released to play three first-class games for Middlesex before the start of the international summer, struggled with the bat during the winter, averaging only 26.4 during the five Tests against Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

BBC London 94.9's Kevin Hand:

"Graham Onions bowled beautifully today in seamer friendly conditions and was rewarded with three wickets including that of England test captain Andrew Strauss for a second-ball duck.

"Dawid Malan batted well once again in his side's recovery but Neil Dexter was very impressive after he survived an early drop at gully.

"The conditions are likely to remain the same throughout the match so scrambling a score around 200 could be crucial to the hosts but Durham will target another early morning collapse."
