Simon Katich fell four short of a double century as Hampshire took full control of their Championship match with Yorkshire.
The Australian, who began a rain-affected day two on 180, fell for 196 to Adil Rashid (3-86), as Michael Bates (103) hit a maiden-first class ton.
In reply to Hampshire's 427 all out, Yorkshire slipped to 32-3 with wickets for Kabir Ali and David Balcombe.
But Phil Jaques made an unbeaten 59 as the hosts closed 327 behind on 100-3.
Rain had earlier kept the sides off the field until 14:30 BST and 37 overs were lost.
Bates and Katich put on 170 for the sixth wicket to equal Hampshire's previous best - a mark set by Phil Mead and Gerald Harrison at Southampton in 1914.
Katich looked well set for a double century but, in trying to get there with a big hit over the top, he was deceived by Rashid's flight and skied the ball to Joe Root at wide mid-on.
