Kent still trail Northants by 138 runs after their batsmen added only 157 runs on a rain-affected day three.
Starting the day on 123-3, Kent lost the early wicket of Brendan Nash (11) before rain disrupted play after lunch.
Mike Powell (61) and Darren Stevens (57) combined for a fifth-wicket partnership of 101, but they both fell after tea, leaving the hosts on 245-6.
Geraint Jones (26no) and James Tredwell (11no) dug in as Kent closed on 280-6 after rain ended play early.
