James Middlebrook scored his first century for a year as Northants dominated the opening day against Gloucestershire in the Championship.
Middlebrook (121) fell six short of his career-best, and put on 134 for the second wicket with Kyle Coetzer (81no).
Northants closed on 302-4 with Alex Wakely out to the last ball of the day.
Gloucestershire used eight bowlers on a frustrating day for the visitors, Will Gidman taking two late wickets to finish with 2-57.
