Northants skipper Andrew Hall saved his side from total collapse after they were reduced to 45-5 by Yorkshire on day one at Headingley.

Hall batted for over four hours for 79, sharing stands of 76 and 69 with David Murphy (40) and David Willey (39).

He struck 10 fours before being bowled by Steve Patterson, who celebrated being awarded his county cap with 3-61.

Ryan Sidebottom also took three wickets as Northants were all out for 253, with the home side 27-0 at stumps in reply.
