BBC Radio Sussex's Adrian Harms:
"After Mike Yardy won the toss yet again, his bowlers backed the decision to field first with an excellent display of seam bowling. Steve Magoffin and James Anyon bowled with excellent control, exploiting the overcast conditions.
"The pitch offered some help for the bowlers, and interruptions for showers didn't help, but overall Surrey didn't bat with the necessary application.
"That was a point emphasised by the excellent response from the Sussex batsmen. Luke Wells batted with real determination on his recalled to the side."
