Essex's Ravi Bopara hit his second half century in three days before his side were frustrated by the rain in their Championship game with Northants.
Bopara, who hit an unbeaten 120 in Essex's CB40 win over Gloucestershire on Monday, remains unbeaten on 65 as his side reached 138-4 at Northampton.
Tom Westley only managed to score 12 and Owais Shah was run out without scoring but Essex recovered from 15-2.
Mark Pettini made 32 and James Foster will resume on Thursday on 25 not out.
Umpires Trevor Jesty and Tim Robinson called an early end to the day's play after a heavy downpour late in the afternoon.
