Mick Newell hopes Samit Patel may face Lancashire

Nottinghamshire director of cricket Mick Newell hopes England all-rounder Samit Patel may yet be able to face Lancashire in Friday's FL t20 game.

Patel is in the England squad to face the West Indies at Headingley in the final one-day international.

Newell told BBC Radio Nottingham: "If Samit doesn't play, maybe he will be released. Andy Flower [coach] has been excellent like that to county cricket."

Notts currently top their group with two wins from their first three games.

Newell's side follow up Friday's game against third-placed Lancashire with a fixture against second-placed Yorkshire on Sunday.

Two wins from those two games would go a long way to securing their place in the quarter-finals.

But Newell says that the absence of Patel and Alex Hales, who will be on England Twenty20 duty on Sunday, will give others an opportunity.

"Sunday we know we will not have Samit and Alex Hales, so can plan ahead," Newell said.

"Graeme White, Scott Elstone, and these kind of people can have that game in their minds and it's a chance for them to make a claim to stay in the team."
