Match scorecard

England Test captain Andrew Strauss hit a century as Middlesex fought back on day three against Nottinghamshire.

Strauss, who scored 50 of Middlesex's 98 runs in their first innings, is unbeaten on 127 in their second as his side attempted to save the match.

Nottinghamshire held a 231-run lead at the start of the day but could only take two wickets in 70 overs.

Chris Rogers added 59 as Middlesex reached 239-2 before rain brought an early end to the third day's play.

The hosts will resume on the last day at Uxbridge with an eight-run advantage and eight wickets remaining, although Nottinghamshire will still be confident of claiming the victory that could keep them top of Division One.

Strauss has scored 177 out of Middlesex's 337 runs in the match and is in fine form ahead of England's first Test against South Africa next week.

Sam Robson was the first Middlesex batsman to be dismissed on Friday when he was caught behind by Chris Read off Andy Carter's bowling.

Strauss and Rogers added 143 for the second wicket before Rogers was trapped lbw by Harry Gurney.

BBC London 94.9 commentator Kevin Hand:

"A masterful innings from Andrew Strauss has given Middlesex a great chance of saving the game.

"The England Test captain set the tone for a side that capitulated in their first knock.

"Sam Robson tried to dig in at the top but fell just after the 50 partnership was brought up, while the stand between Chris Rogers and Strauss removed all fear of a three-day defeat.

"Joe Denly was equally patient in helping Strauss through to tea as an early close was again brought by the elements.

"Nottinghamshire's bowling can't be faulted once again, but the pitch may have eased slightly since the opening sessions of the match."

BBC Radio Nottingham's Dave Bracegirdle:

"A splendid innings from Andrew Strauss has halted Nottinghamshire's Championship charge.

"But with a second new ball not too far away there could be a sting in the tail of this match tomorrow.

"Notts toiled hard but not much went for them on Friday 13th. All credit to the England skipper though for his third career ton against Chris Read's side."
