A final-session fightback by second-placed Yorkshire gave them the slight advantage on the opening day against leaders Derbyshire at Chesterfield.
The visitors looked set for a large first-innings total on 175-3 led by Phil Jaques (61) and Gary Ballance (46), but they stumbled to 219 all out.
Tim Groenewald, Mark Turner and Wes Durston all took three wickets.
The hosts cruised to 43-0 but collapsed to 105-7, before closing on 135-7, trailing by 84 runs.
Richard Johnson will resume on Thursday morning unbeaten on 15 with Tony Palladino 21 not out, as the pair put on an unbroken eighth-wicket stand of 30.
(3-49) impressed for the visitors, while Moin Ashraf took 2-13.
Derbyshire went into the game with a 25-point lead over Yorkshire with nine games gone in the season.
