Northants put themselves right in the Division Two promotion hunt as they fought back to dismiss Yorkshire for 249 on day one at Wantage Road.

The Tykes looked well set on 148-2 in mid-afternoon, with Phil Jaques having made 75 against his old county.

But his needless run-out by Lee Daggett was instantly followed by another dismissal without a run being added.

Yorkshire skipper Andrew Gale then returned a catch to paceman Daggett, who ended the day with 3-64.

James Middlebrook and David Willey both chipped in with two wickets on a day when Yorkshire's batsmen were guilty of getting out to poor shots.

But the turning point came when Jaques was run out by a direct hit by Daggett from mid-off as he and Gale tried to run a quick single off Middlebrook.

As so often seems to happen following a run-out, Gale then followed in the next over when he chipped Daggett's delivery straight back to the bowler.

Jonny Bairstow and Gary Ballance survived until tea, with their side on 175-4. But Yorkshire then collapsed in the evening session.
