#31 - MattH; just spotted your post. A player averaging 50 with the bat in 2011/12 and with 250+ 1st class wickets at 24 impresses me more. That is why Woakes would be better than Taylor. A proper bat (centuries in last 2 county games) and a real - not bits and pieces - bowler.
Agree with the posts calling for 5 bowlers, but we need an all rounder at 7 with Prior at 6. This means Taylor can only get in for one of the top 5. In terms of Taylor's batting I fear, from what I have seen, that he has the faults of a one day bat, esp bat away from pad, and will be another Bairstow.
@ Col 'The world is round and that will come back on him.'
Probably not. However, Smith showed himself to be a nasty piece of work in the 'dead ball' incident. 'Distracted' my a***, just a deliberate ploy to exploit the rules of the game, and trample all over its spirit in the process.
Shame about Bopara as this was an opportunity to secure the no. 6/5th bowler spot. I think Taylor is a good selection however, especially considering his age given that Cook is the only one of the top 5 under 30. He has the look of a test player, I was never convinced about Bairstow although he has talent and may come again. I like Morgan (seriously talented) but he consistently fails to deliver
I very much think he can. I recently wrote an article about it.www.thesharpeend.com
Surely the solution at least in this series is five bowlers? Pick Bresnan and Finn with Prior batting at 6. Bresnan, Broad and Swann have all proved they can add a few runs. It should be up to the top 5 batsmen to get runs on the board.
#32 - the selectors look at things a lot more long term these days. Until this season, Compton's record was mediocre and he was a million miles from the team. England will want to be sure he isn't just going through a purple patch before they pick him. Taylor has made good runs consistently for nearly four years now, including for the Lions.
Hope he's given a longer run than Bairstow got
What about Compton? He should have scored a 1000 runs in May but for the weather. What should an in-form batsman do to break down the blinkered eyes of the establishment?
#27 - how can a player averaging 50 and with 13 FC centuries to his name at his young age not impress you? Also, he may only have one County century this season but he also has a century for the Lions against the Windies, as captain, plus another FC ton. Woakes made the latest Lions squad so is still highly thought of. However, England would prefer a batsman who can bowl at #6 or just a batsman.
