Surrey's woeful County Championship season continued at The Oval as they struggled on day one against Middlesex.
Relegation-threatened Surrey were dismissed for 144 in 44.4 overs with Jason Roy the only batsman to provide any resistance, ending on 55 not out.

Tim Murtagh claimed 5-37, while Toby Roland-Jones also took three wickets.
In reply, Middlesex, fifth in Division One, reached 99-1 at the close of play with Chris Rogers scoring 56 and Sam Robson unbeaten on 29 not out.
Surrey, who have not won a championship match since early April, won the toss and elected to bat, but that decision quickly backfired as they slumped to 41-5.
Rory Hamilton-Brown, who was making his first championship appearance since the death of team-mate Tom Maynard in June, made only two.
South African Zander de Bruyn's miserable run continued as he was dismissed for a 12-ball duck and he has now scored only 25 runs in his last six first-class innings.
Middlesex will resume on Thursday 45 runs behind but with nine first-innings wickets remaining.
VIEWS FROM THE COMMENTARY BOX
BBC London 94.9 commentator Kevin Hand said:
"Middlesex produced a stunning display with the ball and a defiant response with the bat to take the initiative on day one.
"The opening spell of swing and seam from Toby Roland-Jones and Tim Murtagh devastated the Surrey top order with only Jason Roy preventing a humbling total.
"Chris Rogers and Sam Robson held off the Surrey attack in a long final session but the wicket of the former is a big scalp for the hosts.
"The pitch has already offered a great deal of spin for Murali Kartik and Gareth Batty which offers Surrey great hope of playing their way back into the match."
