Here's the best England ODI team:6 brilliant attacking batsmen, 5 great bowlers (2 of whom can bat)PietersenBellBoparaBairstowMorganPriorBresnanSwannAndersonOnionsFinn
mrnone; what possible difference does it make to your own average if you have particular players around you? On your basis Strauss should be batting 100 with Cook, Trott and Bell as his partners. I can respect different opinions on Woakes ability but these spurious arguments to belittle his averages are ludicrous.
@40, good to see someone talking sense about Woakes for a change. I'm fed up of the nonsense that alb1on keeps spouting about him being a genuine allrounder and a better batsman than the likes of Bairstow, Bopara and Taylor. He has an over inflated batting average because he plays in a Warwickshire team with a strong tail and he very rarely bats against world class bowlers in county cricket.
Matt H; my apologies. As a Bears man you will remember the mistreatment of Twose in the 90s, Amiss in the 70s and Cartwright in the 60s. I would hate Woakes to be added to that list.
I'm not from Essex or Surrey. I'm from Warks, support the Bears, am a big fan of Woakes and would love to see him reach the Test team. My point about the not outs is that, as a #8 batsman, it inflates his average more than the batsmen you've been comparing him to. I was never trying to say he's not good enough. Better batsman than Bresnan and Broad, not better than Bairstow and Taylor.
Matt H; it seems bizarre in the extreme not to count not outs. Over any significant time the balls faced add up to the length of substantial innings and if he has avoided dismissal why would the runs not count? Seems like a desperate plea to avoid the obvious conclusion.
Matt H; I sometimes feel I am fighting the whole of Essex and Surrey! My observations are based on 50 years of watching (and playing at good club level). I have not seen better. I would be happy to be proved wrong if he were given a chance but it seems the old boys want to deny him even that. I saw him take apart Tremlett for 140 aged 20. I suspect some here have seen v little of him playing.
Re Matt H. As per cricinfo statistics. Woakes has a first class batting average of 38.03. If all the " not outs" had been "out" then it would still be 28 which is still pretty good when coupled with 248 first class wickets at 24.85. Averages can be misleading but anyone who , like me , witnessed his recent county championship century at Taunton will know what a good batsman he is.
alb1on - the bizarre thing is your man love for Woakes! He is a fine cricketer and one whom I'm sure will play Test cricket at some point. However until he is actually in the side, you can't say he's the best since Botham. Many players struggle to step up. Others, like Collingwood, play beyond themselves. As for his domestic stats, impressive but not outs do inflate the batting average.
Woakes, Hales and Bairstow should play in the ODIs. Was at the Ageus Bowl and team was abysmal. No ambition or desire. Kieswetter and Bresnan were appalling and Cook clueless. Bopara limited to 3 overs despite best economy by far. We did not compete, which has everything to do with attitude and leadership. Rid us of this ‘old boys’ club. Bring in this new blood who have the desire to win
Cricket is literally the worst sport in the world.
In the one day team, a weakness of england is that we dont score many runs in the last 15 overs if morgan fails. People forget woakes spanked brett lee for a few sixes, and will provide ammo at the back end of an innings. Bresnan, bopara and kieswetter are average, and we wont challenge for the world cup if we continue to have such a brittle middle order. Bairstow to keep, kp 4 if probs r sorted.
People are missing the point about woakes. In the test team he would be the 5th bowler, what an upgrade on the bowling of trott as a 5th bowler. And even more impressive is he will be a very good bat and average similarly to all the other incumbents at 6 over the past 18months. Anderson, broad average 30 with the ball and im pretty sure woakes would do that if not better. Prior 6. woakes 7.
Bizarre these comments about Woakes pace. He is an all rounder - the first genuine one England have had since Freddie (and better). He comes in as no 7 and fifth bowler. If you are really concerned re bowler similarity drop Bresnan - Woakes is a better bowler. He is also a better bat now than many of the batting candidates - 48 average in 2011, 84 this year.
