England name Chris Tremlett in performance squad

Chris Tremlett

England have named their Performance Squad for the summer, with Surrey paceman Chris Tremlett the only player not to have featured in an England squad in the past 12 months.

There are few surprises in the EPS, which comprises centrally contracted players and other potential selections.

The 30 players will provide the basis of the teams picked by England in 2013.

England entertain New Zealand and Australia this summer, and will also host the ICC Champions Trophy.

Tremlett, who last featured for England in January 2012, missed most of last year after having back and knee surgery.

The EPS includes two limited-overs specialists who are currently out of favour - all-rounder Ravi Bopara, who was dropped following the ICC World Twenty20 last October, and wicketkeeper Craig Kieswetter, who lost his place during January's one-day series in India.

Pace bowler James Harris, called into the limited-overs squad during the winter, is the only player in the 30 who is uncapped in all three formats.

Also included are seamer Tim Bresnan and first-choice spinner Graeme Swann who are both recovering from elbow surgery.

    I once hit Chris for three sixes in a row - it was under 16 indoor cricket at Fleming Park Leaisure Centre in Eastleigh. I seem to recall it was on the same day as the 1996 Cricket World Cup final - he was 14 year old playing for (I think) either Trojans or OTs, I was 16.

    I would like to think that experience spurred him on to bigger and better things.

    I'm still yet to be convinced by Dernbach & Meaker. Their ODI averages (ok Meaker has only played 2) are 38 and 55 respectively. I always liken Dernbach to Saj Mahmood, good bowler on his day, but the accuracy can be way off. But, I wish them well & hopefully can bowl a bit tighter.

    Great to have Tremlett back. Any from Broad, Anderson, Bresnan, Finn & Tremlett is a great option to have.

    10 + 17 - I didn't see Hales scoring 1000+ runs in the championship last season when the conditions were tough for the batsmen. It's difficult even after a couple of tons for Compton to be accepted alongside Cook, but he's made a damn good job of it.

    Question if Ravi Bopara is understandably a poor choice how is Morgan not one too? His Test and FC record is terrible!

    #17 limited by being the only person to conquer conditions last season when every other batsman in country failed. Coming exceptionally close to scoring 1000 run by the end of May (1 day out due to rain).

    Some people dont know what they are talking about regards to Compton.
    To slow? try looking at the context of his innings, England have had their backs against the wall more often than not, having to bat time.

    He clearly has the shots as if you have actually watched him you will of noticed, hes said himself hes had to rein himself in to secure his place in the team.

    Tremlett could have been a legendary bowler had he stayed fit. Lets hope we can get the best out of him for another 2/3 years.
    Agree that the selectors need to move on from Bopara now. He's never a test player, and looks as if he's blown it in ODIs. Taylor should be in if the ECB are serious about him. What have we learned in 2 tests/ one ODI to decide he's not going to make it?

    @ 26..yesterdays man? Bresnan has played very well for England, including through injury last summer which did cause his form to suffer. He is a valuable member of a team, he may not be spectacular but he does his job.

    #12 averaging 44 after averaging 34 in India, with 2 centuries, 1 50, and multiple 50 and 100 partnerships. What more do you want from an opener? Not everyone can be Alastair Cook.

    Hope this is a sign of a firing Tremlett, hopefully to the Test side as an option against the inconsistent Finn & Broad. Tremlett's performance in the last Ashes series was as good a demonstration of consistent pace, line and length that any English bowler has produced in my lifetime.

    @ 29 - but Bresnan has taken his chance when presented and has shown the selectors he is worth his place. Woakes is much talked about but he still has to impress. Maybe Bresnan has a better attitude I don't know, but to call him yesterdays man is very unfair. Remember it was 14 tests before he lost, and he bowled on some very batsmen friendly pitches.

    Tremlett is a cracking bowler, shame about his injuries. I agree with most people on here in that Bopara should be no where near England anymore. Get Hales in the ODI squad (He shouldnt be talked about for tests...Not yet anyway). Dernbach needs to go away and learn how to bowl properly. He has been chucked in at the deep end and is now struggling. Most expensive bowler in ODIs

    Great news about Tremlett, the Aussies hated facing him in the last Ashes, hope he can regain his form and produce the same aggressive spells again...whilst also keeping Broad and Finn on their inconsistent toes!

    A disappointing adherance to the group who repeatedly failed to beat the mighty um New Zealand. I fear time is running out for either Hick or Ramprakash to return to the England squad.

    Great to see Tremlett back in the frame after a long injury lay off. He made a pretty good impact when he was in the test side and will add to an already strong pool of fast bowlers.

    A couple of 'unproven' names in there, so it'll be interesting to see who will be getting a chance in the coming tests and also who has the bottle to play well during a home Ashes series.

    Very promising!

    Woakes isn't yet international class with his bowling and whether he makes it to that level remains to be seen. He's looked pretty ordinary when playing in the ODI squad. If he is to convince he will have to first take lots of wickets in first class games on the type of good surface you get in test cricket.

    The best genuine allrounder England currently have is Swann. I have to agree about Woakes not being quite good enough (much like Bopara). He may improve but I cant see him being a Flintoff. Broad hasnt developed and is nothing like the all rounder we hoped he could be. As for Bresnan, his batting record isnt great and his average is bolstered by a 91 against bangladesh and a few not outs. Annoying
