Cornwall cricket boss confident about young players

Cornwall team manager Godfrey Furse says he is confident his inexperienced young side can put on a good display in their Minor Counties Championship match with Oxfordshire at Truro.

The Duchy could be without as many as seven capped players for their opening home game of the season.

The lost their first game against Devon earlier this month.

"The good thing is every young player who's come in is capable of playing that level of cricket," Furse said.

Youngsters Scott Harvey, Tom Hughes and Christian Purchase are likely to play, along with veterans Gary Thomas and Neil Ivamy.

Purchase, 19, has just joined Redruth after being released by Gloucestershire and has scored two centuries, including a best of 153 not out, in his three games in the Cornwall Premier League this season.

"He's a very good cricketer, he could go a long way," Furse told BBC Radio Cornwall.

"He seems to have got a very good attitude and a lot of ability so hopefully things will go well for him."
