James Foster turned the tables on day three for Essex against Leicestershire as his fine century set a platform for a late burst of wickets.
Beginning the day 108 runs behind and with only four wickets left Foster, ably supported by Graham Napier (52), took Essex past the 302 target.
Hoggard eventually dismissed him for 143 on his way to a superb 6-66 but Essex built a first-innings lead of 54.
Four wickets for Essex then left the home team stuttering on 91-4.
Joe Burns provided resistance with 39 but Ryan ten Doeschate's 2-15 left Leicestershire leading by only 37 runs and batsmen Shiv Thakor and Matt Boyce with work to do on the final day.
