Thought Cook was right to bow; first and even if Oz score 250 England will be in the driving seat. Good effort by Australia and Siddle in particular, but the lack of true openers was so apparent. It seems (pardon the pun) that seeing off the new ball is a thing of the past. I agree about the T/20 style of batting from both sides, but get use to it as there are few true test bats out there.
Agree totally, I stick by my view, as you do yours. Not "jumping on" anyone, just amazed and supported by a plethora of experts. The batting was abysmal, players in T20 mode instead of Test mode but I'd be surprised if they don't bat better next time round. Trott will be suicidal at the shot he played, ditto prior
#231. Lets move on..You are convinced England should have batted first. I get that. I didn't agree with Cooks call and I still don't, as do others who you have also jumped on. Bottom line, we'll never know! Conditions were conducive to bowling IMO as was demonstrated by the fact 14 wickets were taken. Either way, England were as poor today as they have been all summer when batting first.
@230.EarlsfieldOwlBut you don't make the decision to bowl first based on what conditions are like on the 1st day. The one constant about playing conditions is that you will use the same 22 yards for the duration of the game and that is what dictates the decision. That pitch was a batting paradise with a little atmospheric assistance for bowlers which means you bat first
#226 in light of Australia's batting- yes I stick to my comment. England have been poor batting first some time and the conditions, contrary to what you say, favoured the bowlers though England were feeble. And Conditions didn't get easier to bat on, they stayed the same. Aussie struggled with the bat late on, putting them in first would have made sense. If it's hot tomorrow, we are in trouble.
@227.tonepPoor batting has accounted for the majority of the 14, too many batsmen in T20 mode instead of war of attrition mode. Never easy to predict how overhead conditions will affect things, especially given how little the ball has swung at Trent Bridge this season. So much easier to read a pitch and England want to bowl last.
So far ( and sadly ) this is looking like the England v NZ series. The West Islanders get England out for a lower than expected score and then all hopes are dashed when reality bites as the Underarmers get even less. Still, I reckon the Matildoids will get a few more runs than our fullas, ay?But they said the NZ series was boring. Now that Stubbie-wearers are doing much the same........?
14 wickets down in the day- those who say England should have bowled first were dead right. Amazingly both captains thought the opposite, just cannot believe it. An 11 year old third stringer would have chucked the ball to Jimmy and said go get em. Hope England dont live to regret it, it looks like 2 sunny days ahead.
@221.EarlsfieldOwlSaid the opposite this morning and stick by it! Belter of a track, outfield like glass, conditions unlikely to change all day and, crucially, wicket likely to be even better on days 2-4 with the best spinner in the world to bowl on a wearing track on Day 5, with a target set. Even minimal application today should have seen 260-290 for 5 at worst with power to add tomorrow.
i just cant feel the anticipation of these ashes two average teams one better than the other and other one with an average bowling attack please tell me it will get better than this
OK first job done, avoided the follow on. Now just get as close to 50 as possible and put a bit of pressure on England. This ones in the bag for Australia if they can just get past 40 odd without losing 6 more wickets.
Thanks JC - I did check also. Interesting stuff if you dig deep!

Cloudy conditions, overcast with the likelihood of the ball swinging. England with a swing and seam attack. Aussie with a frail batting and several players untried at this level.mmm what would you do paul? Not about bandwagons, about making the right call. Said it this morning FYI and stuck to it.
